Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes: Basics of Pain Medicine Course

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the Foundations of Pain Medicine:

    • Identify and classify different types of pain, including acute, chronic, nociceptive, and neuropathic pain.
    • Describe the pain pathways and mechanisms involved in pain perception and management.
  2. Perform Basic Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound:

    • Demonstrate an understanding of ultrasound physics and image interpretation.
    • Perform ultrasound-guided interventions for common musculoskeletal pain conditions, such as joint and soft tissue injections.
  3. Apply C-arm Guided Lumbosacral Interventions:

    • Understand the anatomy of the lumbosacral spine and its relevance to pain management.
    • Perform basic C-arm guided interventions, including lumbar facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, and epidural steroid injections.
  4. Manage Cancer-Related Pain:

    • Understand the pathophysiology of cancer pain and the complexities involved in managing it.
    • Explore pharmacological and interventional approaches for the effective management of cancer-related pain.
  5. Treat Neuropathic Pain:

    • Recognize the clinical features of neuropathic pain and its underlying mechanisms.
    • Develop treatment plans that include both pharmacological therapies and interventional techniques for managing neuropathic pain.
  6. Implement a Multimodal Approach to Pain Management:

    • Integrate pharmacological, interventional, and non-pharmacological approaches to create comprehensive pain management plans.
    • Appreciate the psychological and interdisciplinary aspects of pain management in chronic pain patients.
  7. Apply Clinical Knowledge through Case-Based Learning:

    • Analyze real-life case studies and apply practical knowledge of MSK ultrasound, lumbosacral interventions, and cancer/neuropathic pain management.
    • Troubleshoot common challenges in pain management and apply evidence-based practices.

Participants will leave the course equipped with practical skills and knowledge that can be directly applied to their clinical practice, enhancing their ability to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with various pain conditions.
